Technology today has taken over the MLM and network marketing industry. If you’re not taking advantage of it then you probably are not maximizing your potential. This will be the first of a series of articles on technology use in network marketing so keep checking back. Realize the proliferation of the internet over the past 15 years has shrunk the world and made our job a lot easier. A downline in other countries used to be a dream that you might run into someone who would expand back in their homeland. It used to be the big dogs who could afford to travel and find their overseas team members.

Thanks to the internet and the websites that today’s MLM companies are putting online, you never know where your next recruit is coming from. Social media also plays a big part in global expansion for those who know how to maximize its potential and of course MLSP was created with online global growth in mind.

A fantastic tool for not only talking to your prospects and team members around the world but also video conferencing, group calling and screen sharing is Skype. Skype has come a long way over the years and the best part is that most calls are free to others with Skype on their computers. If you use Skype to call mobile phones or land line phones there will be a charge starting at about 1.2 cents per minute. Skype is a very powerful and affordable way to work with people world wide. You should absolutely have your own Skype account. You will be amazed how many people will ask to contact you by Skype. You will also find it very convenient that you can download Skype apps to your smart phones so you are always accessible.  Prospects appreciate and are impressed by being able to reach you at their convenience.

Remember follow-up is key in this business. Those who follow-up the best build the best. As one leader puts it, “you better call your leads or I will”. Take advantage of all the technology tools mentioned here and be prepared to take your business to a higher level.

We Meet PeopleAfter my post “What to say – What not to say when MLM prospecting” I received a lot of emails asking me to expound on what to say to break the ice when talking to someone in the cold market. First of all I always look for people who look sharp, personable people who I would want to work with. I am familiar with the three foot rule (talk to anybody within three feet) however, I personally found that if I was somewhat selective I got more response to follow-up on. I first of all looked for people who appeared to have happy energy, smilers. I like talking to people who smile. When I was pounding the streets I could get the name and phone number of 10 to 15 people daily. These were quality people who were open to my quick presentation and a good number would actually work with me. A big key was that I would not waste time on people who expected a complete presentation on the spot through their 1000 questions. If someone had the time to and wanted to sit with me on the spot I would certainly give a full presentation. Disqualifying the wrong person not only saved me time but also gave me a feeling of power because I knew that I didn’t need everyone. I was looking for the person who was looking for me. There are people out there looking some something better and the person who can help them get it. That is who you are looking for in your prospecting.

So what do you say to break the ice. There are a number of approaches. My favorite is to look for someone doing a great job. Sometimes you can catch someone giving exceptional service or doing a great job handling an unhappy customer. When you see such a situation, complement the person. This makes the approach genuine. I would tell a person “you work very well with people, how long have you been doing this?” then WFA (Wait For Answer) then ask them if they plan to do this forever. Most people don’t plan to do what they’re doing forever although they may not have thought of it that way. Then let them know you’re growing a business in the area and always looking for sharp people. Ask if they would be open to a possible career change if the position and money were right. If they are ask them to jot down a name and number where you can reach then later that day. If they start to ask questions let them know you wouldn’t feel right talking to them about a career change while they are working. If they handle a problem customer well, same thing. “WOW, you handle people very well, how long have you been doing this?

If you see someone who just looks sharp, let them know. Tell them “you look sharp, what kind of work do you do?” WFA then ask them how they like it WFA and ask them if they plan to do that forever. Forever is a long time and for that reason it is a strong word that catches attention and opens minds. Most people say no, so let them know you are expanding and looking. For people who have no desire for change, a good question to ask is if they’re being paid what they’re worth. This catches a lot of attention and gets people listening. then let them know you’re expanding and looking. The last shot is to ask if they’re open to earning extra income in their spare time. Anytime you get a positive response go for the number. Ask them to just got down their name and a number where you can reach them later that day and what might be the best time to call. If all else fails, ask them who they know that is looking for a career change or to earn some extra money part-time. Notice I said who do you know NOT do you know anybody, that is important. You might even go so far to ask who do you work with that is looking or who is your friend or family member who is looking. Get that person’s name and number and get permission to use your prospects name as a referrer.

The bottom line is don’t waste time with the wrong people. People are either open or not. If they’re not open then talking to them for 30 minutes is not going to change their thinking. I shoot for less than a minute but may invest upon to three minutes in an encounter. Some Will – Some Won’t – So What – Somebody’s Waiting, the four WFs. Don’t forget that. It is so easy to think that because someone is asking a lot of questions that they are interested. Most people are looking for a way to disqualify you. If they are sincere they will want you to contact them. If they’re hot they will want your number out of fear that you might not call them back. Those are the best. In any case jot your name and number down for them. If they call you before you call them, you have hot one. Many will ask if you have a card. I never give out cards, I let them know that I don’t have any with me. They may ask the name of the company. I tell them give me an email address and I’ll send them all of the company information which is true. I will email them information for sure after we’ve talked on the phone and I’ve attempted to set up a sit-down.

This method of prospecting for new recruits works as well today as it did 15 years ago, however it is limited to one on one prospecting and you can only be one place at a time. The beauty of internet prospecting with a system like MLSP is that it allows us to be all over the world at the same time, 24 hours a day. Proper online prospecting blows face to face prospecting away like Nissan vs Ferrari. It is MLSP which allows me to actually prospect in my sleep and literally wake up to find prospects contacting me via email. Imagine prospecting in your sleep and not even having to talk to anybody. IT WORKS!

Just like in face to face prospecting, call backs and follow-up is just as important to your growth and success. So that will bring us to a future blog posting about the 500 pound telephone.

Some people discount Twitter as being out of vogue and less influential than Facebook. Facebook now reports over 800 million users. However, Twitter recently announced 100 million active users, half of which tweet to the site on a daily basis. For Twitter that is an 82 percent increase since the beginning of the year. Twitter is increasing faster in 2011 than in 2010, and the company said it is on pace to add more active users, (26 million) in the next four months as in 2006 through 2009 combined. In 2011, the number of users that log into Twitter everyday has slightly more than doubled, or grown 105 percent. Twitter said, just like most internet use, over half of those active Twitter users contribute tweets from a smartphone or other mobile device, Social media and social media marketing are more important than ever in your business balding effort. We are certainly an on the go society and that is where you will find the people you are looking for, “on the go”.

MLM recruiting success and the holiday seasons

One thing I have witnessed over the years is that business owners do not look at this time of the year as down time, they look at it as opportunity time.  Many businesses will run without profits till this last quarter of the year, which is why it is referred to as the “Golden Quarter”.  Success MLM and network marketing sponsors also look at this as a time for growing their businesses. Think of it as the season for prospecting, recruiting and sponsoring.
Think about it, Isn’t this the time that people are going to be spending more money and therefore needing more money? What a perfect opportunity to talk to people about earning a little extra cash in their spare time. Isn’t this the time of year when families get together? What better time to present to warm markets than during these gathering. What are most people looking for as they enter the new year? The answer is change, and for many the opportunity to change careers or even start a new business endeavor will be right up their alley.
The secret to success is that as a MLM or network marketing business owner, you have to look at your market the same as any other business owner does. Businesses are already programming us to get ready for shopping the day after Thanksgiving, now referred to as “Black Friday”. Why not have your own Black Friday and get out there and meet some new people while they are running up those credit card balances or trying to figure out how to pay for those much desired purchases.
In our industry we sell hope and opportunity regardless of our product or service. Times have never been better for helping more people get what they want. As Zig Ziglar has told us for many years, “you can have everything you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want” So be a smart business person and get out there and help as many other people as you can make positive changes in their lives.

MLM Recruting image for Ask Jimmy JohnsonThe answer is NO! Unfortunately too many sponsors in MLM and network marketing do pre-judge or pre-qualify when sizing up prospective recruits. It cannot be done. You can not look at a person and determine that they will or will not be interested in an opportunity that you may offer. The only way to find out if someone would be interested in your business opportunity is to present to them what you have to offer and then let them respond with a yes, no or request for more information. The most successful sponsors are the ones who not only realize this but also practice it.
Understand that your one and only job is to tell your MLM story to as many people as possible and then let them decide if what you have to offer fits in their plans. Of course it helps to learn how to ask questions to find out what is going on in someone’s life to see if you can present your opportunity to then in a way that will help them enhance their life or solve their problems. What is key is learning to talk to everybody who will give you the time of day. That is where the three foot rule comes into play. Talk to any and everyone within three feet of you always. Then spend time talking to those who are most receptive to what you have to offer. As you get more practice talking to more people, you will develop a sense of how much time to spend with a person. You can not force anybody to see what you see. People can only see what “they” see and what “they” see as beneficial to themselves.
Over time you will get better at telling your story so that more people will become interested. However, your presentation skills will not be as important as just going through the numbers. Somewhere out there, there is someone looking for exactly what you or someone else has to offer. The only questions is, who is going to talk to them first? Remember always, you cannot say the right thing to the wrong human being,but you can not say the wrong thing to the right human being.
